Parachute Wings - awarded to soldiers who have completed the Parachute Regiment course.
Trivia - Corporal Mitchell[]
Corporal Mitchell is my favourite character from the movies, mostly because he is portrayed by Ricci Harnett who was in Rise Of The Footsoldier, another good British film. At 1hr 15 into the film, and briefly in other scenes, you can see Mitchell's rank stripes on his right arm. Above his Corporal Stripes there is a small emblem which I recognize as a Parachute Wings badge, suggesting Mitchell, and indeed his unit, may be Paras. This is further reinforced by the fact, Myself being a kit guru I have seen most of the soldiers wear the DPM Parachutist smock, which has a small pocket on the upper arms and has no rank slide. Major West is seen wearing one when he is first introduced. Clifton is wearing one with the cold weather suit he has on underneath. Paras are known to be very aggressive, and this may contribute to Mitchell's vulgar and cocky demeanour. This is just a random bit of trivia that could be mentioned on his page, and that of the other soldiers.
I heard in the "Production Gallery with Commentary" featurette on the Blu-ray that Mitchell's death originally had Jim battering him with his fist before he gouged his eyes out. It was cut because, according to director Danny Boyle, "it just felt too much, really."
