The Shetland Islands are a subarctic archipelago of Scotland that lie north and east of mainland Great Britain. The islands lie some eighty kilometres (fifty miles) to the northeast of Orkney and 280 kilometres (170 miles) southeast of the Faroe Islands and form part of the division between the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the North Sea to the east. The total area is 1,468 km2 (567 square miles) and the population totalled 22,210 in 2009.
In 28 Days Later[]
Within two months after the Original Outbreak of the Rage Virus in mainland Great Britain, the Infection spread to the Shetland Islands. Shetland was then quarantined by the American military, and it would appear that the outbreak on the Shetland Islands was covered up.
28 Days Later (comic series)[]
An illegal expedition into quarantined Britain including Selena and Clint Harris was forced by an air attack by the US Army to land on the Shetland Islands. The group first took refuge in a hotel, but left when they discovered that it was overrun by the Infected, and fled to a pub in Sumburgh.
When Hirsch was infected and killed, and a large number of Infected attacked the pub, the group fled to Sumburgh's port, and left Shetland aboard Harlan's boat; escaping to mainland Scotland.
