Manchester is a city and metropolitan borough of Greater Manchester, England. Manchester has a population of 458,100, and lies at the centre of the wider Greater Manchester Urban Area, which has a population of 2,240,230, the United Kingdom's third largest conurbation.
In 28 Days Later[]
During the Original Outbreak of the Rage Virus, the British Army set up several blockades to protect Manchester against the Infected. However, the Infected eventually breached the blockades and overran the city. (28 Days Later (film))
The Infected rampaged through Manchester, and the survivors there apparently started fires in the city to drive the Infected out of Manchester. (28 Days Later (comic series)) However, with no fire crews to stop the flames, the fires spread out of control and engulfed and destroyed the entire city of Manchester. The fires also drove hundreds of Infected out of the city, but in doing so left the countryside surrounding Manchester swarming with Infected. (28 Days Later (film))

Thirty-one days into the outbreak, Jim, Selena, Hannah and Frank followed a radio broadcast sent by nine surviving soldiers at the Worsley House, to the abandoned Forty-Second Blockade on the M602 outside of the burning ruins of Manchester. (28 Days Later (film))
Some time after the Original Outbreak in Britain, the fires in Manchester apparently went out, leaving the city in scorched ruins. Approximately twenty-seven weeks after the initial outbreak, Captain Stiles travelled with a captive Selena to Manchester, and took her through the burnt ruins of the city, to the Worsley House to the northeast of Manchester. Clint Harris and a US Army squad led by Dog also came and searched Manchester for Stiles and Selena, before proceeding to the Worsley House. (28 Days Later (comic series))
Trivia[]
- It was initially believed that the fires that destroyed Manchester started due to the chaos the Infected caused throughout the city. However, in the 28 Days Later comic series, one of the Black Ops soldiers (who were part of the American black operation in Scotland to try and weaponise the Infection) implied that the survivors in Manchester started the fires that destroyed the city deliberately, in an attempt to force the Infected out.
